Softball Celebrates Senior Day Against Lake Forest

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage softball team hosted the Lake Forest College Foresters on Wednesday afternoon at Wiers Family Stadium and Barbara Madrigrano Field. It was a special day for the Firebirds, as the team celebrated Senior Day and recognized Rylee Johnson, Kiley Lamb, Kirby Peters, Sarah Bennett, Abby Wierzbicki, Maddie Conway, and Izzy Hernandez.

How it Happened

GAME 1
  • The Foresters jumped out in front early in the top of the first, using a pair of singles to score a pair of runs to lead 2-0.
  • A two-run double extended the Lake Forest lead to 4-0 in the second inning.
  • A four-run sixth inning doubled the Foresters lead to 8-0.
  • The Firebirds avoided being run ruled with an RBI double from Wierzbicki to score Lamb.
  • Hernandez doubled to right center field and brought home Wierzbicki to make the score 8-2.
  • Conway singled to center to score Hernandez and bring the Firebirds back within five runs.
  • A seventh inning single scored another run for the Foresters, bringing the final score to 9-3.
  • Conway was hit with the loss after seven complete innings, nine earned runs, and five strikeouts; Conway moved to 9-7 on the season.

GAME 2
  • The Foresters jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
  • The Firebirds answered right back, starting with an RBI single from Kelly Gaiser to bring home Clare Rettler.
  • Hernandez tied the game with an RBI single up the middle to score Gwen Hendrick.
  • Olivia Hristov reached on a fielder's choice as Hernandez was thrown out at second, allowing Gaiser to score.
  • Hristov came around to score on an RBI single from Kristina Chronos, which extended the lead to 4-2.
  • Lamb hit an RBI single down the left field line, scoring Wierzbicki and Hana Adler; The Firebirds ended the first inning with a 6-2 lead.
  • In the third inning, Rettler hit an infield single to score Wierzbicki and extend the lead to 7-2.
  • A two-run home run for the Foresters in the fourth inning cut the Firebirds lead to 7-4.
  • Lake Forest tallied another pair of runs in the sixth inning, cutting the deficit to just one run.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Hernandez hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Rettler and extending the lead to 8-6. 
  • A pair of runs for the Foresters in the seventh would tie the game and force extra innings.
  • A three-run home run in the eighth inning would give the Foresters an 11-8 lead and lead to the series sweep.
  • Hristov was credited with the loss after pitching seven complete innings. Her record on the season stands at 6-4.

High Flyers
 
  • Rettler went 4-8 on the day with two runs and an RBI.
  • Hernandez went 4-7 with a run, three RBIs, a double, and a stolen base.
  • Wierzbicki went 4-7 with three runs, an RBI, and a pair of doubles.
