Softball Earns Walk-off Win At Millikin

DECATUR, Ill. - The Carthage softball team hit the road on Saturday for a CCIW doubleheader against the Millikin Big Blue. After a slow start to the day, the Firebirds bounced back and came away with an extra innings win to earn the series split.

How it Happened

GAME 1
 
  • The Big Blue opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first.
  • Five more runs came across the plate in the third inning to give the Big Blue an 8-0 lead, which would force the run rule two innings later.
  • Maddie Conway is handed the loss and moves to 9-6 on the season.

GAME 2
 
  • Millikin jumped in front early in game two, scoring a run in the first, a run in the second, and another in the third to lead 3-0.
  • In the bottom of the third, Kelly Gaiser hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Kristina Chronos to score and cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • Gaiser continued to shine in the fifth, hitting an RBI double to left field. Kirby Peters and Clare Rettler came around to score and tie the game at 3-3.
  • Both teams stayed scoreless through the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.
  • In the bottom of the 10th, Hana Adler hit a single down the right field line, bringing home Rettler and giving the Firebirds the 4-3 victory.
  • Olivia Hristov gets the win and improves to 6-3 on the season.

High Flyers
 
  • Gaiser went 2-4 in game two with 3 RBIs.
  • Rettler went 3-4 with 2 runs scored in the win.
  • Hristov threw 3.2 shutout and hitless innings in relief to earn the win, earning one strikeout.
