Firebirds Suffer Skid at Chicago

Chicago, Ill. - The Carthage softball team hit the road on Monday for a doubleheader against the University of Chicago Maroons. It was a rough road trip for the Firebirds as the team was swept in the doubleheader.

How it Happened

GAME 1
  • Izzy Hernandez got the offense going for the Firebirds in the top of the first inning with an RBI single to score Clare Rettler.
  • In the second inning, Rettler walked with the bases loaded to bring home Peyton Kryza.
  • An RBI single to left field from Olivia Hristov would bring home Rettler and Rylee Johnson and give the Firebirds an early 4-0 lead.
  • The Maroons got two runs back in the bottom of the second and one in the third to cut the deficit to 4-3.
  • An RBI triple for Chicago in the bottom of the fourth tied the game at 4-4.
  • The Maroons hit a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game 5-4
  • Hristov is handed the loss and falls to 5-3 on the season

GAME 2
  • Kristina Chronos got the offense going in the second with an RBI single to score Sarah Bennett.
  • A grand slam in the bottom of the second inning would give Chicago a 4-1 lead. The Maroons would add another run in the third to jump ahead 5-1.
  • Bennett scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to three runs.
  • The Maroons added a run in the fourth to bring the lead to 6-2.
  • Tallulah Finegold hit a single to right field to bring home Chronos in the top of the fifth.
  • Hana Adler singled to bring home Finegold and Rettler and bring the Firebirds back within a run.
  • Chicago added three more runs before the game concluded and earned a 9-5 win.
  • Emma Faubel was handed her seventh loss of the season.
