Carthage Men's Volleyball Succumbs to Loras 3-1 in CCIW Finals

DUBUQUE, Iowa. — On Saturday's College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament finals, the fifth-ranked Loras defeated the seventh-ranked Carthage College men's volleyball team 3-1.

How it Happened
  • Carthage took an early lead in the first set, with Ryan Cholewinski's solo block giving them a six-point advantage.
  • Gene McNulty extended the lead to 13-8 with a decisive kill.
  • Despite Loras' comeback, tying the score at 17, Owen Otto's kill shifted momentum back to the Firebirds, leading 23-22.
  • Otto's ace and a Duhawks' attack error secured the set for Carthage, finishing 25-22.
  • Ben Heise's kill initially gave Carthage a three-point lead in the second set, but Loras surged ahead by five with a combined block.
  • Although Carthage closed the gap to three with another Heise kill, Loras won the set 25-21.
  • Heise's kill brought Carthage to a 9-8 lead in the third set, followed by a combined block from Heise and David Markes, putting them ahead by one.
  • The teams traded points until Loras pulled ahead 24-20 with a block, ultimately winning the set 25-21.
  • Mitch Geiger's kill tied the score at eight in the fourth set, but Loras gained a four-point lead with a subsequent kill.
  • Carthage responded with a kill from Cholewinski, but Loras finished strong with a 7-3 run, winning the match 25-18.



High Flyers
  • Owen Otto totaled a match-best 20 kills, one shy of his season-best. 
  • David Markes added eight kills, while Ryan Cholewinski had six. 
  • Gene McNulty recorded 42 assists in the match, the sixth time this season he has had 40 or more assists. 
  • Mitch Geiger registered a team-best two aces and had seven digs.
