Softball Earns Thursday Split Against Geneva and Neumann

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Carthage softball team continued play in their spring break trip to Florida with a doubleheader against the Geneva Golden Tornadoes and the Neumann Knights. The Firebirds came up short against Geneva before bouncing back and claiming a victory over Neumann.

How it Happened

VS GENEVA

The Firebirds jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Abby Wierzbicki walked to bring home Peyton Kryza.

The Golden Tornadoes jumped into the lead with an RBI single and a wild pitch that scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning. The Tornadoes added three more runs on a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the top of the seventh, Gwen Hendrick singled to left field to score Clare Rettler to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Emma Faubel was handed the loss and falls to 2-3 on the season.

VS NEUMANN

Hendrick started the scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI groundout to second base to score Rettler. Molly Giesen also came in to score on an RBI groundout from Kryza to give the Firebirds a 2-0 lead early. 

Kyza kept the offense rolling in the third with an RBI single to center field to score Hendrick. Hana Adler singled to center as well, scoring Izzy Hernandez on the play. The Firebirds led 4-0 after three innings.

Giesen scored in the fourth inning on a dropped fly ball that was hit by Hernandez to extend the Firebirds lead to five runs.

A wild pitch in the seventh inning would plate the Knights lone run and end the shutout opportunity.

Maddie Conway earned her second win of the season, improving to 2-1.

  • Conway threw a complete game against Neumann, allowing just one unearned run on seven hits and three strikeouts
  • Kryza went a combined 4-6 with a pair of RBIs on the day
  • Giesen went 2-4 with two runs scored against Neumann
