Softball Silences Wentworth; Falls to Calvin

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Carthage softball team continued play in their spring break trip to Florida with a doubleheader against the Calvin Knights and the Wentworth Leopards. After a tough start to the day against Calvin, the Firebirds bounced back in the second game of the day to earn the shutout victory over Wentworth.

How it Happened

VS CALVIN

The Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning before tacking on one run in the fourth and one in the sixth. The Knights offense got hot in the seventh, adding seven runs to jump ahead 10-0 over the Firebirds.

The Firebirds were held to just three hits in the loss. Maddie Conway was credited with the losing decision and falls to 1-1 on the year.

VS WENTWORTH

The Firebirds wasted no time getting the offense going in the second game of the day. Clare Rettler got the Firebirds on the board in the top of the first when she scored on a sacrifice groundout by Peyton Kryza.

In the fifth inning, Kryza hit a single through the left side to bring home Rettler once again and give Carthage a two-run advantage.

In the seventh inning, Kryza brought in two more runs on an RBI single to right field. Rettler and Olivia Hristov both came in to score on the play to make it 4-0.

Emma Faubel was the starter for the Firebirds, earning the win and improving to 2-2 on the season. Hristov earned her first save of the year.

  • Faubel threw four shutout innings before Hristov finished off the final three innings to earn the shutout victory
  • Kryza went 2-3 with three RBIs in the win over Wentworth
  • Rettler went 5-7 on the day with three runs scored. Her batting average on the year now sits at a stifling .518
