No. 10 Firebirds Hand No. 4 Loras First Loss of the Season

KENOSHA, Wis. — The No. 10 ranked Carthage College men's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over No. 4 Loras on Saturday. 

The Basics
  • Final score: Carthage 3 - Loras 1
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena
  • Records: No. 10 Carthage 15-5 (7-1 CCIW), No. 4 Loras 20-1 (7-1 CCIW)
How it Happened
  • The first set started off with a strong offense from Loras, but two back-to-back kills from Ryan Cholewinski and two attack errors tied the Firebirds at seven. 
  • Carthage battled point-for-point and was unable to exceed a four-point deficit. 
  • Consecutively, a kill from Owen Otto, a service ace from Gene McNulty, and a block from Otto and Cholewinski tied the game again at 17.
  • The Firebirds were able to gain a small lead towards the end of the set but Loras came back quickly to win the set with a kill 26-24. 
  • Carthage was strong going into the second set, leading 2-1 after a kill from David Markes
  • Loras was able to tie the score at six before the Firebirds sprang forth with an 8-4 run, ending with a four-point lead of 14-10. 
  • After a Duhawks timeout, Carthage held the lead by five points and won the second set 25-18.
  • The Firebirds came in hot for the third set, extending an 11-3 lead after a kill from Mitch Geiger
  • Loras got within five, but Carthage kept them on their toes, never letting them get within more than six. 
  • Carthage ended the third set with a block from Otto to win 25-17.
  • Loras and Carthage rapidly started advancing point-for-point against one another at the start of the fourth set. 
  • Loras tied it early at six, but a block from Markes and McNulty brought the Firebirds back up by two.
  • Both teams traded points until a service ace from McNulty gave them a five-point advantage and led 18-13. 
  • The Firebirds stayed ahead of the Duhawks and won the set 25-20 to end the game 3-1.

High Flyers
  • Owen Otto and David Markes led Carthage with double-digit kills on the day with 16 and 13, respectively. 
  • Ryan Cholewinski added six total blocks, while Markes notched five. 
  • For the 10th time this season, Gene McNulty had 30 or more assists, finishing the match with 43.
