Firebirds Struggle on the Road, Prepare to Host McKendree

ST.PAUL, Minn. - The Carthage women's water polo team ended the weekend with four losses across the four games played against Macalester, Austin, Augustana (Ill.), and Washington and Jefferson Colleges at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

How it Happened
Game One
  • Kylie Hemming kicked off the offense for the Firebirds with a goal in the seventh minute of the first period, 1-0. 
  • Alyssa Sayatovic extended Carthage's lead with another goal in the sixth minute of the first period, 2-1.
  • After a few quick scores from Macalester, the two teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first period.
  • Brenna Carstens found the net in the last fifteen seconds of the second period, evening the score 3-3 before heading into halftime. 
  • After going scoreless in the third period, Carthage entered the fourth quarter down, 6-3. 
  • Victoria Hodges and Alyssa Sayatovic both scored in the final five minutes of the game, 7-5. 
  • Carthage fell 8-5 against Macalester. 
Game Two
  • Yamila Areizaga was the first to score for the Firebirds, finding the net in the fourth minute of the first period, 1-1. 
  • Brenna Carstens added to the Firebirds offensive effort with a goal in the final minute of the first period, 2-1. 
  • Carthage found themselves tied, 2-2, to start the second period.
  • Victoria Hodges and Kylie Hemming both scored in the seventh minute of the second period, giving Carthage a 4-2 lead over Austin. 
  • Carthage was ahead 4-3 at halftime. 
  • Brenna Carstens ignited the offense with a quick score in the seventh minute of the third quarter, 5-3. 
  • Behind 7-5, Emily Steingard added to the offensive effort with two minutes left in the period. 
  • Despite beginning the fourth quarter behind 7-6, Carthage's Sarah Lowery maintained the momentum with a score in the seventh minute. 
  • The Firebirds struggled in the final minutes, falling 10-7 against Austin. 
Game Three
  • Alyssa Sayatovic helped get Carthage on the board with a score in the seventh minute of the first period, 1-0. 
  • Brenna Carstens added to the offensive effort with another score in the fourth minute of the first period, 2-1. 
  • After a few scores from Augustana, Carthage found themselves behind 3-2.
  • Abigail Karpluk found the net in the final two minutes of the second period, and Carthage trailed 5-3 at the end of the first half.
  • Alyssa Sayatovic and Faith Harris both scored in the sixth minute of the third period, evening the score 5-5. 
  • Abigail Karpluk closed out the offensive effort with a final score in the last second of the third period, 7-6. 
  • Carthage went scoreless in the fourth period and fell 12-6 against Augustana. 
Game Four
  • Brenna Carstens opened play with a score in the seventh minute of the first period, 1-0
  • After two scores from Washing and Jefforson, Abigail Karpluk added another score to the board, balancing the score 2-2 with fourth minutes left in the first period. 
  •  Yamila Areizaga closed out the Firebirds' offense with another score, 4-3, and Carthage found themselves behind, 5-3, at the end of the first period. 
  • Alyssa Sayatovic jump-started the offense in the second-quarter, decreasing Washington and Jefferson's lead to 8-4. 
  • Brenna Carstens and Yamila Areizaga both scored in the final two minutes of the first half, with Carthage behind 9-6 to start the third period. 
  • After going scoreless in the third period, Carthage found themselves behind 11-6 to start the final period. 
  • Alyssa Sayatovic opened the quarter with a score, 11-7, in the final seventh minute of play. 
  • Abigail Karpluk and Yamila Areizaga each contributed scores in the final five minutes of play. 
  • Carthage fell 13-9 against Washington and Jefferson.
