Firebirds Suffer Road Loss, Prepare to Bounce Back Against North Park Next Week

ROCK ISLAND, ILL. - In Saturday's College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action, the Carthage College women's basketball team fell against Augustana 78-68.

The Basics
  • Final score: Augustana 78 - Carthage 68
  • Location: Carver PE Center - Rock Island, Ill. 
  • Records: Augustana 11-10 (7-6 CCIW) Carthage 11-10 (4-8 CCIW)
How it Happened
  • The Firebirds got off to a slow offensive start, trailing 11-2 with seven minutes to go in the first period. 
  • A made three-pointer by Lauren Knight at the end of the quarter which decreased the lead to seven, 20-13.
  • Carthage regained momentum over the second quarter with Malia Green scoring a three-point bucket,  making it a four-point game.
  • A jumpshot by Maeve Wojcik put the FIrebirds behind by four points, heading into halftime down 37-33.
  • Coming out of halftime, the two teams went back-and-forth and found themselves tied 49-49 with under three minutes left in the period.
  • The two teams kept each other at bay, entering the final quarter tied 54-54.
  • Lauren Knight kicked off Carthage's offense in the fourth quarter with a made jumpshot in the first minute. 
  • Augustana and Carthage found themselves tied at 62 with five minutes left. 
  • The Firebirds struggled to find the rim in the final minutes, which ended in a 78-68 road loss to Augustana.

High Flyers
  • Lauren Knight led with 24 points and three steals, Marianna Morrissey added 21  points and seven rebounds. 
  • Knight eclipsed the 1,000 career point mark in the contest and is the 26th student-athlete in Carthage history to achieve the feat. 
  • Addison Ebeling, Elena Kneble, Malia Green, Maeve Wojcik each added five points and two rebounds a piece.
Team Results
  • Carthage will hit the road and take on North Park (Ill.) Wednesday, February 7, at 7 p.m.
