Firebirds Defeat Occidental At Macalester Invitational, Prepare for Spring Break

ST.PAUL, MN. - The Carthage women's water polo team ended the weekend with one win and three losses across the four games played against Occidental College, Virginia Military Institute, Ottawa University Arizona, and Augustana (Ill.) at the Macalester College Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.

How it Happened
Game One
  • Alyssa Sayatovic kicked off the offense for the Firebirds with a goal in the fourth minute of the first period. 
  • Victoria Hodges extended Carthage's lead with another goal in the sixth minute of the second period. 
  • After a quick score from Occidental, the Firebirds led 2-1 after the first two periods. 
  • Carthage maintained the offensive pressure and Faith Harris found the net in the fifth minute of the third period to increase the Firebirds' lead to 3-1. 
  • Victoria Hodges found a rhythm and scored two more goals for the Firebirds in the fourth period, extending the lead to 5-2. 
  • Brenna Carstens closed out the offensive effort for the Firebirds with a score in the final minutes of the game and secured a 6-3 win over Occidental. 
Game Two
  • Alyssa Sayatovic was the first to score for the Firebirds, finding the net in the seventh minute of the first period, 1-0. 
  • Piper Dooley added to the Firebirds offensive effort with a goal in the final minute of the first period, 5-2. 
  • Carthage found themselves trailing 6-2 to start the second period and ended the first two periods behind 9-2.
  • Despite going scoreless in the second period, Grace Steinberg found the net in the third minute of the third period, 10-3. 
  • Carthage trailed by double-digits at the start of the fourth period, 12-3. 
  • Piper Dooley and Taylor Woitesek each added a goal in the final two minutes of the game, before falling 19-5 against Virginia Military Institute. 
Game Three
  • Carthage got off to a slow start, going scoreless in the first period, and began the second period down 3-0. 
  • Brenna Carstens got the Firebird offense started in the final seconds of the second period, and Carthage headed into the half behind 6-1.
  • The Firebirds continued to make offensive efforts with Yamila Areizaga finding the net in the fourth minute of the third period, 8-2. 
  • Carthage struggled in the fourth period and fell 12-2 against Ottawa. 
Game Four
  • Carthage struggled throughout the first two periods and found themselves behind 8-0 to start the third period. 
  •  Yamila Areizaga jump-started the offense with a goal in the seventh minute of the third period, 9-1.
  • While trailing 11-1 to start the fourth period, Yamila Areizaga found the net again in the third minute of the final period. 
  • Carthage fell 16-2 against Augustana. 
High Flyers Team Results
  • Carthage will be on the road for their spring break trip which is scheduled for March 4-10.
