Firebirds Begin 2024 Season on the Road, Look Ahead to Macalester

LEBANON, Ill. - The Carthage women's water polo team fell 12-4 against Augustana (Ill.) and 15-4 against McKendree on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
Game One
  • The Firebirds found themselves trailing early, 3-0, with four minutes left in the first period. 
  • A goal from Kylie Hemming ignited Carthage's offense. 
  • Carthage's Abigail Karpluk found the net with a score in the final two minutes of the first period, and headed into the second period down 3-2. 
  • Carthage struggled to maintain the momentum into the second period, and found themselves behind 9-2.
  • Carthage saw goals from Alyssa Sayatovic and Brenna Carstens in the fourth quarter, before falling 12-4 to Augustana. 
Game Two
  • Abigail Karpluk was the first to score for the Firebirds, decreasing McKendree's early 2-1 lead with four minutes left in the first period. 
  • The Firebirds struggled in the second and third periods, resulting in a 13-1 deficit going into the fourth quarter. 
  • Emily Steingard found the net twice across two minutes of play during the fourth quarter, 14-3. 
  • Grace Steinberg added a goal to the offensive effort in the final minutes of play, before Carthage fell 15-4 to McKendree.
