Women's Basketball Leaves 2024 with Victory Over Luther; Improves to 9-2 on the Season

KENOSHA - The Carthage women's basketball team returned home to close out 2024 with a game against the Luther Norse in Tarble Arena on Monday afternoon. After a close start to the game, the Firebirds pulled ahead in the second half to come away with a victory over the Norse. 



Malia Green wasted no time getting the Firebirds on the scoreboard, sinking a fast-break layup just four seconds into the game. Emma Carlson followed up the early basket with a jump shot to give Carthage a 4-0 lead to start the game. A pair of three point baskets for the Norse swung the lead to Luther's favor with the score at 6-4. Another layup from Green leveled the game at 6-6 with six minutes to go. Marianna Morrissey got on the scoreboard with a pair of layups to extend the lead to 10-6. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the opening quarter until Nora Ahram drained a three pointer with 25 seconds left to give the Firebirds a 17-13 lead after the first period. Morrissey led the squad with six points in the quarter.

Ahram opened the second quarter with a basket to extend the Carthage lead to 19-13. The Firebirds lead was cut to three points before a three from Grace Wamser extended the lead back to six points at 27-21 with 3:18 to play in the half. A 4-2 stretch for the Norse closed the gap to four points as the Firebirds entered halftime with a 29-25 lead. Carlson finished with a team high four points in the second quarter and eight points in the first half.

Morrissey opened the second half with a layup, which was followed immediately by a three pointer from Green to extend the lead to 34-25. Another layup for Morrissey extended the lead to 11 before a 5-0 run for the Norse cut the lead to 36-30. Emma Thistle scored on a layup while drawing a foul on Luther's Haylie Strum and made the free throw to complete the three-point play. The Norse found momentum late in the third quarter and brought the deficit back to within five points of the lead. Four made free throws and a three pointer from Thistle built the lead up to 12 points for the Firebirds, while a layup from Grace Cord capped off an 8-0 run for the Firebirds to end the quarter. Carthage led 50-36 heading into the fourth quarter. Thistle led the way with 10 points in the third quarter.

The offensive run continued into the fourth quarter, as the Firebirds opened with a 9-2 run in the opening 2:35. The run was powered by a three from Wamser, a pair of baskets from Carlson, and a fast-break layup from Thistle. The Firebirds held their biggest lead of the day at 59-38 with 7:25 to play. A 6-0 run for the Norse cut the lead back to 14. The squads traded baskets the rest of the way and the Firebirds held an 11 point lead as the final buzzer sounded. Carthage claimed the victory 68-57. Wamser and Carlson each finished with six points in the final quarter of the game.


 
  • Carlson led the way with 16 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.
  • Thistle finished with 12 points, three rebounds, and four assists. All 12 points came in the second half.
  • Morrissey finished with 10 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
