Late Surge by Carthage Falls Short at Augustana (Ill.)

ROCK ISLAND  — The Carthage College football team fell to Augustana (Ill.) on the road Saturday afternoon 31-21. 

The Basics
  • Final score: Augustana (Ill.) 31 - Carthage 21
  • Location: Rock Island, Illinois - 
  • Records: Augustana (Ill.) 4-5 (3-5 CCIW), Carthage 2-7 (2-6 CCIW) 


How it Happened 
  • The Vikings jumped to an early lead with 14 points in the first quarter before Bryce Frank broke loose for a 75-yard touchdown run, narrowing the gap to eight.  
  • Augustana (Ill.) took a 21-6 lead into halftime.  
  • The home team extended their lead in the second half with a 35-yard touchdown pass. However, Briton Stanton responded with a 52-yard pick-six on the following defensive series.  
  • A 33-yard field goal by the Vikings pushed the score to 31-13.  
  • Carthage fought back as Bryce Lowe connected with Argjent Ismaili for an 80-yard touchdown pass, bringing the margin down to ten with 1:47 left on the clock.  
  • Augustana (Ill.) ultimately held on for a 31-21 victory.


High Flyers
  • Argjent Ismaili led the Firebirds in receiving with 154 yards off four catches averaging 38.5 per catch. 
  • Bryce Lowe passed for a season-best 282 yards through the air and one touchdown. 
  • Bryce Frank rushed for 96 yards on the ground and one touchdown. 
  • Briton Stanton led the defensive effort for the Firebirds on the day with 10 total tackles and an interception. 
  • Tanner Ludwig added eight tackles for Carthage. 


Coachs Remarks

"We started the game not as we planned. We need to play better in the first half, however, I'm proud of the guy's effort and playing hard the whole game."

  • The Firebirds wrap up the season playing Carroll (Wis.) next Saturday, starting November 16 at noon.
