Firebirds Hold Off Ripon for 76-66 Triumph

KENOSHA - The Carthage College men's basketball defense held strong for a 10-point win against Ripon Tuesday evening 76-66. 

The Basics
  • Final Score: Carthage 76 - Ripon 66
  • Location: Tarble Arena - Kenosha, Wisconsin
  • Records: Carthage 3-2, Ripon 2-3
How it Happened
  • AJ Johnson got the Firebirds on the board after a layup two minutes into the game.
  • Ripon and Carthage battled neck and neck for the lead, with both teams trading baskets. Ripon held a margin against the Firebirds by no more than two.
  • A three-pointer from Tanner Lamb gave Carthage a three-point lead, which AJ Williams extended as he followed up with back-to-back three-pointers, making it 24-18.
  • The two teams battled for baskets, but the Carthage defense held strong, holding a lead of two or more for the remainder of the half to end leading 40-33.
  • The Firebirds came in hot to start the second half of the game. After a jumper from AJ Williams, Riley Brooks started the second half strong offensively with 10 straight points to extend the Firebirds' lead to 52-36.
  • Carthage continued to advance their advantage as the Red Hawks fought to lessen the deficit.
  • With 5:45 left in the half, Ripon got within ten twice. However, a lone free throw from Ryan Johnson and two from AJ Williams made it 76-64.
  • The visitors fought to gain a lead with another pair of free throws but ultimately faced defeat as the Firebirds won the game 76-66.

High Flyers
  • AJ Williams led the way in both points with 17 and rebounds with eight. 
  • Ryan Johnson followed closely behind with 15 points and seven rebounds. 
  • Riley Brooks trailed both Williams and Johnson scoring 15 points, and four rebounds. 
  • Garrett Arnold led the team in assists with four.
