Firebirds Soar Past Scots in Home Opener

KENOSHA- The Carthage College men's basketball team had their 2024-25 home opener on Saturday, November 16, convincingly defending Tarble Arena against Alma 89-56. 

The Basics
  • Final Score: Carthage 89 - Alma 56
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena
  • Records: Carthage 2-0, Alma 0-3
How it Happened
  • After a solid offensive start from the Scots with a free throw a minute in, Carthage retaliated with back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore Riley Brooks, followed by a three-pointer from AJ Williams to gain the advantage 9-1 early in the first half.  
  • AJ Johnson and Brooks extended the Firebirds' lead to 13-2 with a pair of jumpers.  
  • After Alma fought to gain an advance, Carthage fought with a 9-2 run, ending with a dunk from Ryan Johnson, extending their lead 23-3.  
  • The Scots attempted to gain a lead, but the Firebirds' defense held strong. Shots from Elijah Thomas, Tanner Lamb, and Griffin Daun extended their lead to 40-15 with six minutes left in the half.  
  • Just before the three-minute mark, AJ Williams came in with a dunk to extend the lead to 44-21.  
  • Williams and AJ Johnson extended the Firebirds' lead with jumpers to end the first half 48-25.  
  • Daun came in within the first minute of the second half with back-to-back jumpers, followed by a three-pointer from Brooks to build the Firebirds' lead up 55-28.  
  • The two teams battled against each other, yet the Firebirds' defense remained impenetrable.  
  • Shots from Mason Miller, Patrick Laurich, Dane Hamilton, and Andy Nash within the last five minutes of the game held Carthage in the lead, ascending to victory 89-56.
