Firebirds Battle to 3-2 Victory in CCIW Tournament Opener

KENOSHA — To start the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament the Carthage College women's volleyball team reverse swept the No. 6 seed Augustana (Ill.) on Tuesday night.

  • Final Score: Carthage 3 - Augustana (IL) 2 (21-25, 16-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-8)
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena
  • Records: No. 3 seed Carthage 17-11, No. 6 seed Augustana (Ill.) 10-20 
How it Happened
  • Augustana (Ill.) took an early lead, going up 16-12 in the first set.
  • Carthage responded, closing the gap to 21-18 after a kill from Katie Boston, but a final kill by Augustana secured the set 25-21.
  • Ella Pettinger tied the second set at six, but Augustana went on a 10-3 run to seize control. A kill from Kaitie Rohe brought Carthage to 22-16, but Augustana closed it out with three consecutive points to win the set.
  • Carthage dominated the third set from the start, opening with a 9-1 lead after kills from Kristina Manojlovic, Liv Carel, and Boston.
  • Augustana fought back within three points, but two kills by Carel and Manojlovic, along with an ace from Tatum Kebisek pushed Carthage ahead by six. A final kill by Manojlovic clinched the set 25-23.
  • Down 15-9 in the fourth, Carthage rallied. Despite Augustana reaching match point, two late kills from Rohe and Boston, followed by a block from Devinn Bell and Boston, forced a fifth set with a 26-24 win.
  • Building on the momentum, Carthage started the fifth with a 7-3 lead. Though the visitors tied it at eight, Carthage closed the match with eight consecutive points, capped by an ace from Kyla McTeague, to secure the victory at 15-8.

  • The Firebirds will travel to face the No. 2 seed Millikin on Thursday, November 14 at 7 p.m. for the semifinals of the CCIW Tournament.
