Men's Soccer Celebrates Senior Night Against North Park

Carthage 1, North Park 1
KENOSHA - The Carthage men's soccer team hosted the North Park Vikings at Art Keller Field on Wednesday evening. It was a special night for the Firebirds, as the team celebrated senior night by recognizing Roland Dearborn, Veeti Penttinen, Mark Sollenberger, Michael Malyszek, Christian Hinestrosa, Nick Renfro, Aidan Crowder, Jethro Yumange, and Mickey Reilly. Crowder and Reilly were recognized for their school records. The match featured significant importance in the CCIW standings, as the Vikings could clinch a share of the CCIW title with a win over the Firebirds and a loss from the Wheaton Thunder, who simultaneously were facing the North Central Cardinals in Naperville, Ill. With an early goal, the Vikings had the CCIW championship in sight until a late push from the Firebirds changed the fate of their opponent.

How it Happened

The Vikings jumped ahead early in the first half with a goal in the 10th minute from Dennis Rinne. The Firebirds took nine shots in the opening 45 minutes, but the Vikings defense kept the Firebirds scoreless into the half.

The two sides battled back and forth in the second half with both squads threatening to score throughout the period. In the 85th minute, Jordan Mok sent a cross into the box that deflected off the Vikings goalkeeper and the ball found the right foot of Crowder for the equalizer. The game would end in a 1-1 draw, with the Firebirds spoiling the Vikings' opportunity to claim the CCIW regular season title.

Coach's Remarks

"A bittersweet night tonight," said Head Coach Paul Leese. "I'm very proud of the guys for their performance. They could have eased off, but they showed great integrity for Carthage Soccer and for the CCIW. It's always a sad moment to coach players in their final college game. But I know these seniors will now support the team from off the field; and they will share in our future success as they were the foundation of it."

High Flyers
  • Crowder registered his team-leading 8th goal of the season, finishing off his career at 38 goals. He finished in fifth place on the Carthage all-time goal scoring list.
  • Goalkeeper Evan Kowalski registered 7 saves in the game, bringing his season total to 83 saves.
  • Mok earned his team-leading 7th assist of the year.
