Cornell 3, Carthage 1

MOUNT VERNON - The Carthage women's volleyball team competed in a pair of matches at the Cornell College Quad on Saturday afternoon. It was a tough day for the Firebirds, as the team dropped a match to Coe College Kohawks before falling to the Cornell Rams.

How it Happened

VS COE

The Firebirds found themselves down 10-6 early in Set 1 against the Kohawks. A kill from Kristina Manojlovic sparked life into the Firebirds offense and started an 8-0 run for the Carthage offense, which featured 3 kills for Manojlovic and a service ace from Liv Carel. The Kohawks retaliated with five unanswered points to take back the lead 15-14. The two squads traded rallies the rest of the set before the Firebirds shut the door with a kill from Manojlovic and a block from Manojlovic and Katie Boston. Carthage took the opening set 25-22.

The Firebirds jumped out to an early 8-5 lead in the second set, with offensive kills coming all over the court. 12 points later, the Kohawks held a 13-12 lead. Carel registered a kill the game and the Firebirds went on a 5-0 run that was carried by a pair of service aces from Cassidy Stahl. A 5-1 rally brought the Kohawks right back into the game, leveling the score at 18-18. The teams traded points until the game was tied at 24-24. An ace and a kill for the Kohawks ended the set at 26-24 and tied the match at 1-1.

The Firebirds bounced back in the third set, jumping out to an early 14-6 lead with kills from Boston, Carel, Manojlovic, and Kaitie Rohe. The Kohawks tried to claw back into the set, bringing the score back within five points before the Firebirds closed out the set with a 25-18 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Carthage jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the fourth set, but a 5-1 run for the Kohawks kept the set close at 11-10 in favor of the Firebirds. An 8-1 run boosted the Kohawks to an 18-12 lead, before ultimately taking the set 25-18.

The Kohawks utilized the momentum of the fourth set victory to jump ahead 8-4 in the final set. The Firebirds looked to swing the momentum with a block from Manojlovic and Ella Pettinger, as well as a kill from Carel which cut the deficit to 8-6. However, the Kohawks were able to keep the distance in their lead and took the final set 15-11 for the 3-2 match victory.

VS CORNELL

The Firebirds started the match by getting out to a 16-13 lead over the Rams in the opening set. The Rams used a 5-0 rally to jump ahead 18-16 before taking the first set 25-22.

Boston carried the Firebirds back into the match with three kills in the middle of a 6-1 rally that gave Carthage a 12-11 lead. The squads continued to trade points until the Rams led 23-22. Coach's Remarks

"Couple of tough losses in Iowa today," said Head Coach Leanne Ulmer. "We battled Coe in 5 sets but came up short. Kaitie [Rohe] and Tina [Manojlovic] led us in kills while Devinn [Bell] ran the offense. We had 14 blocks in the match with Katie [Boston] and Ella [Pettinger] leading the way. The stats were so close in most categories but we needed to close out the close ones.  The match with Cornell was very competitive in the first 3 sets with 7 total points making the difference. Once again we needed to close out the close sets. Katie [Rohe] and Tina [Manojlovic] led us again at the net. Jenna [Damon] had a big match with 22 digs. Overall, we were competitive in each set. Back to practice this week to work on finishing strong and getting ready for our CCIW match at Wheaton then home on Friday against UW LaCrosse for senior night. I want to give a shout out to Coach Matt Popino and our football team for getting the Dub down in Millikin!  Go Birds!"
