Late Goal Stumps Firebirds in Naperville

NAPERVILLE - The Carthage men's soccer team hit the road on Saturday to face off against the North Central (Ill.) Cardinals. The match featured a defensive battle the entire way, but a late goal for the Cardinals would prove to be the deciding factor.

How it Happened

Both sides were held scoreless through the first half of the match, with North Central registering the only three shots on goal. In the second half, the Cardinals out shot the Firebirds 5-2, with three shots being on goal for the Cardinals and just one for the Firebirds. The game winning goal came in the 83rd minute from North Central's Will Mayer. The Firebirds were unable to retaliate in the remaining seven minutes of regular time, falling to the Cardinals 1-0.

Coach's Remarks

"The game was there for us today," said Head Coach Paul Leese. "but we were unable to grab it. We lacked a little fight that we need to get back in our game. We are now in the final stretch of the conference season and we need to finish strong."
