Firebirds Split Outing at Wisconsin-Whitewater

WHITEWATER  — On Friday afternoon, the Carthage College women's volleyball team split competition at Wisconsin-Whitewater defeating St. Mary's (Minn.) 3-0 before falling to host No. 5 Wisconsin-Whitewater 3-0. 

The Basics
Game One 
  • Final Score: Carthage 3 - St. Mary's (Minn.) 0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-19)
  • Location: Whitewater, Wisconsin - Kris Russell Volleyball Arena
  • Records: Carthage 11-7 - St. Mary's (Minn.) 9-13
Game Two  
  • Final Score: No. 5 Wisconsin-Whitewater 3 - Carthage 0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-14)
  • Location: Whitewater, Wisconsin - Kris Russell Volleyball Arena
  • Records: Wisconsin-Whitewater 17-3, Carthage 11-8
How it Happened
Game One 
  • Carthage opened the first set with a strong 8-3 lead, highlighted by a kill from Katie Boston and an ace from Jenna Damon
  • St. Mary's (Minn.) attempted to close the gap, bringing the score to nine after a kill, however, Carthage quickly regained momentum with a kill by Kristina Manojlovic at 13-11.
  • Devinn Bell delivered a crucial kill, extending Carthage's lead to 23-14 as the Firebirds collected the final two points to win the set. 
  • Carthage led 7-5 in the second set, with Ava Dettwiler contributing a kill. 
  • Carthage held a 12-7 lead following another kill by Manojlovic. 
  • The Cardinals pulled within four points at 17-13, but an ace by Cassidy Stahl and a final service error by St. Mary's (Minn.) closed the set at 25-19.
  • The Cardinals held a 7-4 margin early in the third before Carthage rattled off an 11-3 run flipping the score to 15-10. 
  • A combined block by Ella Pettinger and Liv Carel made it 20-13 as Carthage went on to win the match 25-19. 
Game Two
  • Wisconsin-Whitewater opened the first set with a 7-4 lead before a kill by Carel helped Carthage close the gap. 
  • The Firebirds fought back with a kill from Manojlovic and an ace from Stahl, cutting the deficit to 17-13. However, Wisconsin-Whitewater maintained their momentum and won the set 25-15.
  • The Warhawks again built an early lead in the second set, going up 6-3. 
  • Carthage answered with a kill from Rohe, pulling within two. 
  • Wisconsin-Whitewater responded with a 5-1 run, increasing their lead to 14-8. 
  • Despite key kills from Bell and Rohe the Warhawks closed the set at 25-18.
  • The third set saw Wisconsin-Whitewater jump ahead 8-4. 
  • The Firebirds, led by Pettinger and Boston, rallied to cut the lead to 13-8 in the third. However, the Warhawks' defense held strong, and they pushed their lead to 17-10. 
  • Carthage couldn't mount another comeback, as Wisconsin-Whitewater took the final set 25-14. 
High Flyers
  • Liv Carel had a match-best 14 kills in the first game of the day marking the 10th time this season recording double-digit kills. 
  • Kristina Manojlovic followed closely with 13 kills against St. Mary's (Minn.). 
  • Devinn Bell totaled 38 assists in both games while Tatum Kebisek had 13 against Wisconsin-Whitewater. 
  • Jenna Damon registered 10 digs against the Warhawks. 


Coachs Remarks
"We had a good start to the night with a good team win over St. Mary's! Kristina Manojlovic and Liv Carel led us in kills. Jenna Damon, Cassidy Stahl, and Madi Danielson did a nice job on serve receive, and defense. Devinn Bell and Tatum Kebisek did a nice job running the offense.  In the nightcap, we played a tough Whitewater team. Kaitie Rohe, Kristina Manojlovic, and Katie Boston led the offense."

  • The Firebirds return to conference play facing Elmhurst at home on Wednesday, October 23 at 7 p.m.
