Women's Basketball Battles Fiercely Against Millikin

KENOSHA, Wis. - On Saturday afternoon, the Carthage College women's basketball team put up a strong fight against the No. 11/No.14 Millikin but ultimately succumbed to the Big Blue with a score of 78-68.

The Basics
  • Final score: No. 11/No.14 Millikin 78 - Carthage 68
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena
  • Records: Millikin 11-3 (3-2 CCIW), Carthage 10-5 (3-3 CCIW)
How it Happened
  • Carthage secured an early five-point lead in the first quarter, courtesy of a three-pointer by Lauren Knight.
  • The Firebirds extended their advantage to 17-7, propelled by a fastbreak layup from Margueret Spear.
  • Millikin, ranked No. 11 in this week's D3hoops.com women's top 25 poll and No. 14 in the women's basketball Coaches Association poll (WBCA), narrowed the gap to eight by the end of the first quarter.
  • In the second quarter, Grace Wamser's three-point shot maintained Carthage's lead at 10.
  • Though the Big Blue's tried to reduce the deficit, a jumper from Elena Knebel with 1:07 remaining and a last-second layup from Marianna Morrissey ensured Carthage went into halftime with a 36-33 lead.
  • Millikin briefly took a one-point lead off a layup during the third quarter. However, a lone free throw from Nora Ahram propelled the Firebirds ahead by two.
  • The Big Blue established a six-point lead, but a three-pointer from Spear with 46 seconds left reduced the advantage to three going into the final quarter.
  • Carthage held a four-point margin until two buckets in the paint gave Millikin a six-point advantage.
