Women's Basketball Comes Up Short in Triple Overtime Thriller

KENOSHA, Wis. - In Saturday's College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action, the Carthage College women's basketball team fell against Elmhurst 91-88 in triple overtime.

The Basics
  • Final score: Elmhurst 91 - Carthage 88 (3OT)
  • Location: Kenosha, Wis. - Tarble Arena

How it Happened
  • Both teams got off to a quick offensive start, with Elmhurst heading into the second quarter with a three-point lead, 13-10, over Carthage. 
  • A three-pointer by Grace Cord in the final seconds of the first half evened out the score, 23-23, heading into halftime.
  • Elena Knebel opened up play in the third quarter with a made layup, giving Carthage a two-point lead, 25-23, with nine minutes remaining. 
  • Despite the various lead changes, Carthage found themselves trailing 40-38 to kick off the final ten minutes of play. 
  • The two teams kept each other at bay throughout the final period. Carthage held onto the lead, 55-53, with less than two minutes remaining. 
  • The teams exchanged leads until a layup by Grace Wamser with one second left evened out the score 59-59, sending the game into overtime. 
  • Carthage secured a 67-66 hold over Elmhurst with three minutes remaining with a bucket from Lauren Knight. 
  • Down by three points in the final second of the first period of overtime, Carthage's Elena Knebel's successful shot from beyond the arc sent both teams into a second overtime. 
  • The two went back-and-forth and sustained an even 78-78 score with 52 seconds remaining. 
  • While Knight's made jumper gave Carthage an 80-78 lead over Elmhurst, the Blue Jays responded with a jumper in the final seconds to open up the third overtime session. 
  • The Firebirds and Blue Jays maintained the pace, with a pair of free-throws from Marianna Morrisey keeping the game at a balanced 84-84 with three minutes left. 
  • The Firebirds trailed by four points, 90-86, before falling 88-91 to Elmhurst after three overtime periods. 


High Flyers
  • Lauren Knight led with 26 points and eight rebounds, while Marianna Morrissey chipped in with 24 points and thirteen rebounds. 
  • Elena Knebel added nine rebounds, while Emma Thistle and Addison Ebeling each added four rebounds to the defensive effort. 
  • Thisle tallied 12 points in the contest and a team-best five assists while Knebel nearly missed a double-double on the day with 11 points.
