No. 11 Men’s Volleyball Shuts Down Spartans in Home Opener

KENOSHA, Wis. — In their season home opener, the No. 11 Carthage College men's volleyball team defeated Aurora 3-0 in non-conference action on Thursday. 

The Basics
  • Final score: Carthage 3 - Aurora 0

  • Records: No. 11 Carthage 3-2, Aurora 0-1
How it Happened
  • Starting the match, first-year Ben Heise used two back-to-back kills that set the Firebirds up for a 4-0 lead to start. 
  • The Spartans fought to keep up with the Firebirds but fell behind after a five-point run from Carthage. 
  • The visitors never cut the margin as Carthage won the first set 25-10 with a kill from Owen Otto
  • Continuing into the second set, a quick kill from Drew Jansen led the Firebirds back-and-fourth with the Spartans until Aurora got within two at 16-14. 
  • A solo block from Ryan Cholewinski made it 20-15 as Carthage won the second. 
  • Two back-to-back kills from Heise and Otto started the Firebirds off strong in the third set. 
  • A service error and two attack errors heightened the lead for the Firebirds to a 21-14 score.
  • After a quick back-and-forth between the teams, a kill from Jansen sealed the deal 25-17 for the 3-0 win. 


High Flyers
  • Drew Jansen tallied a match-best 10 kills for the Firebirds, along with Ryan Cholewinski and Owen Otto with nine. 
  • Gene McNulty and Ryan Morey added double-digit assists with 22 and 17, respectively. 
  • Jansen and Zack Noland each had six digs for Carthage on the day. 
  • The Firebird offense hit .457 in the match (42 kills, 10 errors, 70 total attacks).

  • The Firebirds head to Huntingdon, Pa., as they will play No. 12 Juniata on Thursday, February 1.
