Baseball Sweeps Monmouth to End the Regular Season

MONMOUTH, Ill.  — On Sunday, the Carthage College baseball team swept Monmouth 9-6 in game one and 12-2 in game two to end the regular season.

How it Happened
  • During game one, a two-run single from P.J. Moser started the scoring for the Firebirds. 
  • A sac fly from Nick Caruso was deep enough to score Joe Zuleger, making it 3-0 in the first. 
  • In the fourth, a two-run double from Cody Tostrud extended the lead to five as another sac fly from Collin Callahan scored Tostrud for a 6-0 score. 
  • A wild pitch in the fifth scored Tostrud, and a sac fly from Chuckie Smith allowed Jake Fulton to cross home plate, moving the Firebirds ahead 8-0. 
  • Monmouth plated a lone run in the fifth and four in the sixth, shrinking the deficit to three. 
  • An RBI double from Fulton put Carthage in front by four. 
  • Though Monmouth tallied a run in the eighth, Carthage won the game 9-6. 
 
  • Game two saw Zuleger hit an RBI double in the first and a three-run homer from Dawson Gaynor in the second for a 4-0 score. 
  • In the third, Logan Grimm hit a two-run home run widening the lead to 6-0. 
  • In the sixth, Carthage added three with an RBI double from Tostrud and an RBI single from Kody Krekling
  • A single from Evan Devine in the seventh scored Oren Hill as Carthage went on to win 12-2.
