Baseball Swept by Illinois Wesleyan in Friday Home Doubleheader

KENOSHA, Wis.  — The Carthage College baseball team fell to Illinois Wesleyan in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action on Friday afternoon 4-2 in game one and 10-5 in game two. 

The Basics
Game One
  • Final score: Illinois Wesleyan 4 - Carthage 2
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Augie Schmidt Field
  • Records: Illinois Wesleyan 6-14 (2-2 CCIW), Carthage 7-12 (2-3 CCIW)

Game Two
  • Final score: Illinois Wesleyan 10 - Carthage 5
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Augie Schmidt Field
  • Records: Illinois Wesleyan 7-14 (3-2 CCIW), Carthage 7-13 (2-4 CCIW)

How it Happened
  • AJ Gaca got the Firebirds going in the third with a solo home run to left field. 
  • The Titans took the lead with a two-run fifth inning and added to their lead in the eighth with a single run. 
  • Although a sac fly from Cody Tostrud in the eighth scored Gaca, Illinois Wesleyan plated a lone run in the ninth and held on to take the first game 4-2. 
 
  • Following a home run to open the second game for Illinois Wesleyan, Carthage retaliated, scoring three in the first off an RBI single from P.J. Moser and a two-run homer from Joe Zuleger
  • In the second inning, the home team added another run off a throwing error. 
  • A single run in the fifth and three in the seventh flipped the score to 5-4. 
  • The Titans scored two in the top of the eighth until an RBI single from Logan Grimm scored Oren Hill shrinking the deficit to two. 
  • Illinois Wesleyan scored three in the ninth, winning 10-5.  

High Flyers
  • AJ Gaca registered his first career home run for the Firebirds in game one as the catcher went two for three. 
  • Joe Zuleger had a homer and double between both games followed by Mike Ciesla with a double in the second game. 
  • On the mound, Bryce Schaum pitched six innings and struck out five. 


Team Results
 
  • The Firebirds hit the road for a single game against Elmhurst on Saturday, April 8. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
