Firebirds Come Up Short in Regular Season Finale

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.  — In the final game of the regular season, the Carthage College men's lacrosse team fell to Illinois Wesleyan in a game with 37 combined goals scored 19-18. 

The Basics
  • Final score: Illinois Wesleyan 19 - Carthage 18
  • Location: Bloomington, Illinois - Tucci Stadium 
  • Records: Illinois Wesleyan 12-3 (6-0 CCIW), Carthage 11-5 (3-3 CCIW)

How it Happened 
  • After Illinois Wesleyan scored first, Carthage retaliated with two goals from Colin Poitras and George Burchfield
  • The Titans regained the lead, scoring two. 
  • At the 5:04 mark of the first, Poitras tied it at three. 
  • The home team ended the first quarter with three unanswered goals taking a 6-3 advantage to the second. 
  • Carthage responded, netting three straight goals from Ben Krok, Andrew Frey, and Burchfield. 
  • After the Firebirds tied it at eight, Illinois Wesleyan went back ahead by two. 
  • A goal from Frey and a last-second goal from Poitras shrunk the Titans' deficit to 11-10 heading to halftime. 
  • Carthage got the lead back with two goals from Poitras and Andrew Johnson.
  • Illinois Wesleyan used a 5-1 run as the home team went to the final quarter ahead 16-13. 
  • Although Carthage found the back of the net five in the final quarter coming from Burchfield, Krok, Johnson, and Potiras, the Titans squeezed out the victory 19-18. 


High Flyers
  • Six different Firebirds registered a goal or more in the contest: Colin Poitras (7), George Burchfield (3), Ben Krok (3), Andrew Johnson (2), Andrew Frey (2) and Alec Gern (1). 
  • Poitras is now the new single-season leader in the CCIW for most goals scored in conference play at 32. 
  • Krok was the team's top assist leader with four, marking the ninth time Krok has had three or more assists in a game. 
  • Andrew Johnson also had three assists for five points, while Alec Gern had two assists. 
  • Jake Williamson grabbed seven ground balls, followed by Jameson Stahl with five. 
  • Williamson also made a season-high 16 saves in goal for the Firebirds.
 
 
Coachs Remarks

"That was a championship-level lacrosse game, and I am really proud of the team. We didn't get the win, but I thought both teams played at a really high level for sixty minutes. We will be back here on Thursday, and we can figure out how to slow them down and play more consistently to get the win."

  • The Firebirds will turn around and play Illinois Wesleyan again in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament, which starts Thursday, May 4.
