Firebirds Tournament Run Ends in Naperville

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Facing North Central (Ill.) for the fourth time this season, the Carthage College men's volleyball team fought hard but fell 3-1 in the NCAA Men's Volleyball Elite Eight Regional Tournament matchup.

Carthage got the ball rolling with a kill from Drew Jansen.
North Central (Ill.) controlled a one-point set lead until an attack error tied it at seven.
Kills from David Markes and Carter Schmidt made it 10-7.
The Cardinals battled back, tying it at 12 off an attack error.
Another attack error gave the home team a one-point lead; however, a service error tied it at 14.
With the set tied at 17, Bulthuis nailed a kill for the one-point lead.
Following the set locked at 22, the Cardinals went back in front by two and took the set 25-22.
The first three points of the second went to Carthage as a kill from Markes, an attack error, and a Schmdit ace started the second.
North Central (Ill.) stormed back as an attack error saw the set even at four.
Back-to-back kills from Mitch Geiger moved the Firebirds in front 7-4.
Jansen added another kill for a 12-11 score.
The Cardinals rallied, taking a one-point margin until a service error tied it again at 18.
The following 11 points saw six lead changes and five ties until North Central (Ill.) sat on set point with a kill.
A Cardinals attack error tied it at 25, then a solo block from Schmidt on the following point moved the visitors ahead by one.
Carthage used another kill from Jansen and a solo block by Markes to win the second 29-27.
In the third, the Firebirds controlled a 7-4 score with a kill from Schmidt.
Later a kill from Bulthuis, then a block by the tandem of Markes and Jansen, moved the Firebirds in front 15-12.
The Cardinals used two kills to control the set 17-16.
With momentum, North Central (Ill.) pushed the margin to three at 20-17.
Though Carthage got within one, the home team won the third with a kill 25-21 with an ace.
In the fourth, the home team controlled a 10-5 score early with a kill.
Following a Carthage timeout, North Central (Ill.) pushed the score to nine with a kill.
Although the Firebirds got it to seven following an attack error, North Central (Ill.) pushed the margin back to nine.
An ace from Geiger made it 19-12, but the home team went on to win 25-14.

Carter Schmidt was the leader in kills on the day finishing with 12 followed by Drew Jansen who had 10.
Jack McDonald added 10 digs on the day along with Mitch Geiger adding nine.
Setter Gene McNulty chipped in with 41 assists marking back-to-back games the junior had 40 or more assists.
