WHEATON, Ill. - Now winners of three in a row, the Carthage Firebirds softball team is starting to click with the conference schedule in full swing. The Firebirds picked up a 7-5 in game one of a doubleheader with the Thunder before game two was suspended during play due to rain in the area. The team now sits above .500 in conference play (6-5).
Carthage's offense is continuing to perform as of late, scoring seven runs on 16 hits in the game one victory. Six Firebirds -
Izzy Hernandez (three),
Maddie Conway (three),
Gracie Vlach (two),
Gwen Hendrick (two),
Abby Wierzbicki (two), and
Clare Rettler (two) all had multi-hit games to help propel Carthage to its third-consecutive win. With three hits today,
Izzy Hernandez extended her hitting-streak to 11.
Game two will be completed on Thursday, April 27 at 3 p.m. in Illinois.

Game Two
- Game two was suspended in the fourth inning due to rain and will be resumed on Thursday, April 27 at 3 p.m. in Illinois.
- Carthage's offense got out to a hot start, scoring the game's first two runs in the top of the first inning. An RBI single from Izzy Hernandez opened the scoring while an error from the Thunder allowed the second run of the inning to score. Carthage led 2-0 after its half of the first inning.
- Wheaton promptly responded in the bottom of the first, scoring a pair itself on consecutive two-out singles.
- A sacrifice-fly from Sarah Bennett put the Firebirds back on top in the third inning, as the veteran shortstop scored Gwen Hendrick.
- After scoring a run in the third, Gwen Hendrick played the role of run-producer in the fourth inning. The first-year star knocked a two-RBI single up the middle, scoring Clare Rettler and Abby Wierzbicki.
- Pitcher Maddie Conway scored Gwen Hendrick in the sixth, singling in the first-year outfielder to put Carthage ahead 6-2.
- Wheaton shrunk Carthage's lead to one in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking advantage of a walk, a fielding error, and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to chisel into its deficit.
- Carthage brought home a much-needed insurance run in the ensuing inning, as Olivia Hristov doubled in Abby Wierzbicki, who had a productive day on the base paths. Maddie Conway held serve in the circle in the bottom of the seventh inning, quelling the Thunder to lead Carthage to victory.
- As previously mentioned, a number of Carthage hitters had excellent days at the plate. Six Firebirds - Izzy Hernandez (three), Maddie Conway (three), Gracie Vlach (two), Gwen Hendrick (two), Abby Wierzbicki (two), and Clare Rettler (two) all recorded at least two hits for Carthage. Not a single Firebird struck out in the win.
- Gwen Hendrick and Abby Wierzbicki each scored a pair of runs and tallied two base hits for Carthage. Hendrick also drove home two runners and drew a walk in the win.
- Izzy Hernandez extended her hitting-streak to 11 in the win, picking up three hits, a run, and an RBI in the process.
- Olivia Hristov doubled in a Firebird, picking up her second-career double and RBI in doing so.
- Carthage will host North Park University for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 26 at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
