Softball Completes Previously Suspended Game in Wheaton

WHEATON, Ill. - After rain the Wheaton area on April 19 suspended play in the fourth inning of game two of a doubleheader between Carthage and Wheaton (Ill.), the two teams completed the rest of the game on Thursday afternoon. Wheaton didn't relinquish its' strong lead that it carried over from over a week ago, defeating Carthage 8-3. 

Carthage won game one of the doubleheader back on the 19th, giving the teams a doubleheader split.

  • Final Score: Wheaton (Ill.) 8, Carthage 3

  • Records: Carthage 12-19 (7-7 CCIW), Wheaton 7-25 (2-12 CCIW)

How it Happened
 
  • Way back on April 19, the Thunder struck first - scoring a pair of runs in the first inning to go ahead 2-0. A two-RBI double set the Thunder in motion. 
  • Carthage halved its deficit in the bottom half of the initial inning of play, as Izzy Hernandez singled in Clare Rettler
  • Wheaton brought two more runs home in the next half inning, aided by an error from the Firebirds. 
  • In today's action, which began in the fourth inning, the Thunder struck early to further its lead to 5-1. 
  • Another run came home in the fifth, as Wheaton singled in a run with some help from another error by Carthage. 
  • Carthage got that run back in the bottom of the inning, also via an error, before tacking on another one later on. Rylee Johnson send the second Firebird home in the fifth, scoring Olivia Capuano on a sacrifice fly. 
  • Wheaton brought two more runners home in the top of the sixth inning as Carthage committed another costly error. 
  • The Firebirds couldn't claw back, resulting in an 8-3 defeat. 

High Flyers
 
  • Catcher Olivia Capuano recorded the second three-hit game of her career and also scored a run. 
  • Clare Rettler had yet another multi-hit game in a Carthage uniform, knocking two base hits and scoring two runs. Rettler leads the team in multi-hit games with 14. 
  • Izzy Hernandez drove in two runners in the loss, adding to her team lead in RBIs (30). 

Up Next
 
  • In a slight change of schedule, Carthage will now take on Millikin University next Wednesday, May 3 beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Kenosha. Carthage was originally scheduled to play UW-Whitewater on Wednesday, but will now try to find a new date for the non-conference doubleheader.
