Women's Lacrosse Drops Conference Opener to Nationally-Ranked Maroons

CHICAGO, Ill. - Playing for the first time in nearly two weeks, the Carthage Firebirds women's lacrosse team hit the field tonight for its conference opener against the No. 16 UChicago Maroons, falling 26-7. 


The Basics
 
  • Final score: UChicago 26, Carthage 7
  • Location: Stagg Field Complex  - Chicago, Illinois
  • Records: Carthage 7-5 (0-1 CCIW), No. 16 UChicago 9-2 (1-0 CCIW)

How it Happened
 
  • The No. 16 Maroons opened up the scoring on their home field, netting one at the 13:08 mark of the opening period. 
  • Carthage's Piper LeFevre responded on a free position shot less than a minute later to tie the game at 1-1. UChicago scored the next two goals before conversions from Maddie Berni and Rachel Harris tied the game once again, this time at three apiece. 
  • UChicago scored two out of the next three goals to take a 5-4 advantage heading into the second period. 
  • A UChicago goal put the home team up 6-4 before first-year student-athlete Kyleigh Higgins promptly answered for the Firebirds. 
  • The remaining portion of the second period was thoroughly dominated by the defending CCIW champions, as UChicago rattled off nine unanswered goals to take a commanding 15-5 lead heading into the locker room. The Maroons outshot Carthage 19-3 in the second period as the Firebirds turned the ball over eight times. 
  • The home team extended its lead to 13 after netting the first three goals of the penultimate period. Piper LeFevre answered with a goal off of a free-position shot, but the Maroons rattled off another trio of unanswered goals to end the period. Carthage trailed 21-6 with 15 minutes of lacrosse left. 
  • Carthage couldn't carve into UChicago's lead any further in the final period, falling 26-7. 
  • The Maroons didn't turn the ball over a single time tonight and took 33 more shots than the Firebirds, helping propel them to victory.

  • The Firebirds will play one more on the road before returning home to Art Keller Field for a pair of games in two weeks. Carthage's next contest is with the defending CCIW champions - UChicago - at Stagg Field Complex in Chicago. The Firebirds and Maroons will play on Wednesday, April 12 starting at 6 p.m.
