Fourth Ranked Firebirds Soar High Against Duhawks

KENOSHA, Wis. — The No. 4 Carthage College men's volleyball team picked up their 10th-straight win of the season on Wednesday night, defeating Loras 3-1. 

The Basics
  • Final score: Carthage 3 - Loras 1
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena
  • Records: No. 4 Carthage 12-3 (4-0 CCIW), Loras 12-3 (1-2 CCIW)

How it Happened 
  • Carthage landed themselves on the board first with a kill from Carter Schmidt
  • A block from Drew Jansen saw the score even at seven in the first.
  • Zach Bulthuis came in with a kill, giving the Firebirds a 13-12 lead.  
  • After the Loras gained control, the Firebirds responded with two kills from David Markes
  • Loras held on to win the first set 25-22.
  • After battling point-for-point, Markes landed a kill tying the second at seven.
  • Although Loras put together four unanswered points, back-to-back blocks by Kyle Radecki and Zach Bulthuis diminished the deficit to 13-12. 
  • On the following point, Schmidt came in with a kill to tie the score at 14.
  • Another kill from Schmidt and Bulthuis saw the Firebirds go up 21-18. 
  • A kill from Bulthuis ended the second set 25-23, tying the contest at one set apiece. 
  • Carthage used an early 4-0 run early in the set as Bulthuis connected on a kill to make the game 11-10
  • A block from the dynamic duo of Markes and Schmidt held the Firebirds lead at one. 
  • After an 8-2 run from Carthage used an 8-2 run to close out the set as a kill from Markes won it 25-21. 
  • The Firebirds and the Duhawks traded point for point through the duration of the fourth set until a kill from Keegan Brumitt and a block from Markes and Brumitt saw the home team go ahead 6-4. 
  • After a 4-0 run by the Firebirds, the Duhawks came back strong to gain a lead flipping the score to 13-14. 
  • A service ace from Schmidt brought the score up to 19-15.
  • Although Loras got within one late in the set, two errors for the Duhawks won the match for the home team 25-22. 

High Flyers
  • Both Carter Schmidt and Zach Bulthuis finished with 14 kills. Schmidt led the team in aces (3) and digs (8). 
  • Bulthuis surpassed two career milestones on the day; kills (500) and total blocks (200). Bulthuis also hit .765 in the contest (14 kills, one error, 17 total attacks)
  • David Markes had a match-best six blocks, and Gene McNulty added 39 assists.
