Firebirds Overcome First Set Jitters to Beat Loras in Four

DUBUQUE, Iowa. — The No. 9 Carthage College men's volleyball team started the last week of March with a 3-1 win over Loras. 
The Basics
  • Final score: Carthage 3 - Loras 1
  • Location: Dubuque, Iowa - Lillis Court
  • Records: No. 9 Carthage 15-5 (7-1 CCIW), Loras 15-5 (4-4 CCIW)
How it Happened 
  • The home team came out swinging, starting with a 6-3 advantage. 
  • A kill from Mitch Geiger and an attack error for Loras shrank the deficit to one. 
  • The Duhawks pulled away to win the first 25-15. 
  • Carthage turned the tables in the second, going up 14-11 with a combined block from Zach Bulthuis and Ryan Morey
  • Drew Jansen connected on a kill for a 17-12 score two points later. 
  • Loras battled back, taking a one-point lead with a block, but Carthage closed out the second with four unanswered points highlighted by a kill from Bulthuis. 
  • In the third, a block from Ryan Cholewinski and Jansen saw Carthage hold a two-point advantage. 
  • Later, a kill and ace from Bulthuis moved the score to 21-19 in favor of the visitors. 
  • David Markes put the Firebirds up two games with a kill. 
  • Loras held a 20-13 score in the fourth until Carthage rattled off a 9-2 run tying the set at 22. 
  • As the Duhawks stood on set point, the Firebirds won the match 26-24. 

High Flyers
  • David Markes had a match and season-best 14 kills, followed closely by Zach Bulthuis with 13. 
  • Markes also had 13 digs on the day, while Jack McDonald and Drew Jansen followed with 11 and 10 digs, respectively. 
  • Mitch Geiger added eight kills, while Ryan Morey notched 40 assists in his first start at Carthage. 
  • The victory marked the 15th straight win over Loras for the program.
