Carthage Men’s Volleyball Cut Short at Dominican

RIVER FOREST, Ill. — In their final non-conference match of the season, the No. 6 Carthage College men's volleyball team fell to Dominican (Ill.) 3-1 on Thursday night.  

The Basics
 
  • Final score: Dominican (Ill.) 3  - Carthage 1
  • Location: River Forest, Illinois - Igini Sports Forum
  • Records: Dominican (Ill.) 6-10, No. 6 Carthage 13-5 

How it Happened 
 
  • Out of the gate, Carthage held a 9-8 margin with a kill from Gene McNulty
  • After the Stars went ahead 18-15, the Firebirds rallied, flipping the score to 22-19 with a kill from Carter Schmidt and a combined block from Schmidt and Ryan Cholewinski
  • Back-to-back kills from David Markes, and Justin Girodat won the set for Carthage 25-22. 
  •  In the second, two consecutive errors for the home team gave Carthage a 10-5 advantage. 
  • Later, Zach Bulthuis added a kill and extended the Firebird lead to three. 
  • Dominican (Ill.) came back to tie it at 17 with a kill of their own. 
  • A block from Mitch Gieger and Bulthuis put Carthage back in front by one. 
  • Schmidt later tied it at 25 with a kill, but Dominican (Ill.) won the second 27-25. 
  • Two consecutive kills by Markes cut the Stars' advantage to one in the third. 
  • Dominican (Ill.) used an 8-2 run to balloon the lead to 21-14 as the Stars won the third 25-19. 
  • In the fourth, both teams traded point for point as Carthage went ahead by three, sparked by a Bulthuis kill. 
  • Carthage tied it at 23 and went back in front by one off an attack error. 
  • The lead changed three times as the score was tied five times until kills from Schmidt made it 31-30.
  • The Stars ended the game collecting the final three points to win the match 33-31. 

High Flyers
  • Three Firebirds finished with double-digit kills: Carter Schmidt (14), David Markes (12), Zach Bulthuis (11). 
  • Markes hit .611 in the match with only one error off 18 total attacks. 
  • Gene McNulty added 39 assists in the match and had a team-best eight digs.

  • Carthage returns home for a 3 p.m. conference game against Illinois Wesleyan on March 25.
