Women's Volleyball Triumphs with 3-2 Win; Advance to the CCIW Semifinals

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage College women's volleyball team competed against Elmhurst on Tuesday, November 7th, in the first found of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament. After five sets of tough play, the Firebirds came out on top, taking the match 3-2. 

The Basics
  • Final score: Carthage 3, Elmhurst 2
  • Location: Kenosha, Wis. - Tarble Arena
  • Records: Carthage 17-12 (CCIW 6-3), Elmhurst 17-10 (CCIW 3-6) 
How it Happened
  • The Firebirds went on an early three-point run with kills from Katie Boston and Liv Carel, forcing Elmhurst to call a timeout. After the timeout, Boston came out hot with two solo blocks. 
  • Madilyn Danielson subbed in to serve for the Firebirds and created a seven-point run to take the first set. The seven-point run included kills from Carel, Kristina Manojlovic, and Boston, with Danielson grabbing an ace. 
  • Firebirds won 25-17 with a kill from Carel.
  • During a three-point run for the Firebirds, Carel came out with a major kill to the back right corner. 
  • Elmhurst controlled a majority of the set, winning 25-16. 
  • Carthage went on yet another quick three-point run with a kill from Katie Rohe and an ace from Jenna Damon, forcing the Bluejays to call timeout. 
  • Ella Pettinger used back-to-back kills to give the firebirds big energy towards the end of the set. Carthage took the third set 25-23.
  • Carel grabbed another kill to give the Firebirds a two-point lead in the middle of the fourth set. 
  • The Firebirds went on a three-point run with kills from Leena Ajibola and Manojlovic to give the Firebirds a three-point lead late in the set. Followed by another three-point run, causing Elmhurst to call a timeout to regroup. 
  • Elmhurst recollected themselves, forcing a fifth set off a kill. 
  • The Firebirds responded in the fifth, coming out 3-0 immediately with an ace from Cassidy Stahl and a kill from Rohe. 
  • After a hard-fought match, the Firebirds took the fifth set 15-10, taking home the match win 3-2. 

High Flyers
  • Kristina Manojlovic, the first-year player, registered 14 kills in five sets. 
  • Liv Carel broke the 300-season kills mark tonight by totaling 12 on the night. 
  • Devinn Bell completed 43 assists in five sets, creating a new season high and breaking the 500 mark. 
  • Ella Pettinger snatched 5 total blocks, acquiring a new season-high. 
  • Kaitie Rohe picked up 5 blocks, tying her season high for total blocks, and paired that with 12 kills of her own. 
  • Jenna Damon grabbed 23 digs; she is now hovering near the 500 digs mark.

  • Carthage will now play the No. 2 seed Millikin on the road at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 9.
