Carthage Firebirds Seize Thrilling 77-73 Win Over Top-Ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater in Non-Conference Clash

KENOSHA, Wis. - On Tuesday evening in non-conference play, the Carthage College men's basketball team secured a 77-73 victory over the top-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The Basics
  • Final score: Carthage 77 - Wisconsin-Whitewater 73

  • Records: Carthage 5-1, Wisconsin-Whitewater 5-1
How it Happened
  • The Firebirds' flair started with a strong driving layup from Antuan Nesbitt and another shortly after from Fillip Bulatovic. 
  • After a seven-point run from Wisconsin-Whitewater, AJ Johnson ran in with a layup to get Carthage moving, making it 17-12. 
  • The visitors jumped to a six-point advantage until a steal and dunk from Ryan Johnson cut it to 24-20.
  • With 1:20 left in the first half, AJ Johnson tied it at 26 with a jumper. 
  • A free throw from Anthony Bernero with three seconds left brought them closer to tying, leaving the score 29-27 for the half. 
  • Returning to the court in the second half, Nesbitt used a layup to put the Firebirds ahead 31-29. 
  • Within the first four minutes, AJ Williams sank three three-pointers, giving Carthage a 40-34 score. 
  • Williams was fired up and came down with another three, capping a six-point run for Carthage. 
  • Carthage held a more than 10-point lead against the Warhawks until the visitors battled back, getting within two with 2:27 remaining. 
  • The Warhawks got the margin to one with a three-pointer. 
  • Clutch free throws from the AJ Johnson and Ryan Johnson duo put the home team back in front by five with 15 seconds left. 
  • Though Wisconsin-Whitewater sank a three with three seconds left, Ryan Johnson added a pair of free throws for the 77-73 victory. 

High Flyers
  • Fillip Bulatovic led the Firebirds in points with 21, followed by Antuan Nesbitt, who had 14 and seven rebounds. 
  • Sophomore AJ Williams added 13 points, while AJ Johnson had 12 and six rebounds. 
  • First-year student-athlete Ryan Johnson totaled 11 points and nearly missed a double-double on the day, grabbing nine rebounds.
