Firebirds Set to Host CCIW Championship Game, Defeat Cardinals 4-3

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Carthage men's soccer team defeated the No. 1 seed North Central 4-3 in overtime during the second round of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin(CCIW) Tournament. 
The Basics

  • Records: Carthage 11-5-2 (4-3-1 CCIW) - North Central 15-2-2 (6-0-2 CCIW)
How it Happened
  • The Firebirds' offense struggled to find their footing, only six shots in the first 45 minutes. 
  • In the second half, Mickey Reilly got the Firebirds on the board in the 55th minute. 
  • Trailing 2-1, the Firebirds offensive found a way to even out the score, with Aidan Crowder scoring in the 76th minute. 
  • Both teams held each other to 2-2 to send the game into overtime.
  • Carthage maintained the momentum going into extra time as in the first three minutes of the first overtime, Joe Balas scored and gave the Firebirds their first lead of the night. 
  • Up 3-2, Carthage kept the pressure on the Cardinals and extended their lead with another goal from Mickey Reily, assisted by Jack Georgi, in the 122nd minute. 
  • The Firebirds held onto the lead to defeat the Cardinals 4-3.

"It was a physically and emotionally draining game against an outstanding opponent in North Central. The boys keep impressing me with their effort and support for each other. They never gave up tonight, even at 2-0 down, and deserve every bit of that win."

  • No. 4 seed Carthage will take on No. 6 Illinois Wesleyan in the Championship round of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament on Saturday, November 4, at 7 p.m.
