Hard Fought Five Set CCIW Match Ends with Firebirds Coming Up Short Against Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - In the first match in October, the Carthage College women's volleyball team fell to Augustana (Ill.) Wednesday night on the road. 

 The Basics
  • Final score: Augustana (Ill.) 3 - Carthage 2
  • Location: Rock Island, Illinois - Roy J. Carver Center
  • Records: Augustana (Ill.) 13-4 (2-2 CCIW), Carthage 10-7 (2-1 CCIW)


How it Happened
  • Two kills from Kinsey Bakhaus propelled Carthage ahead 12-7 in the first. 
  • Augustana battled back, getting within one with four straight points. 
  • Later, the Devinn Bell and Bakhaus duo extended the Firebird lead to four. 
  • A block from Liv Carel and Katie Boston moved the score to 22-19 as Carthage won the first 25-22 off two kills from Kristina Manojlovic
  • Block from the Boston and Kaitie Rohe pair tied the second at 12. 
  • Carel and Bakhaus added two consecutive kills, moving Carthage in front by two. 
  • The Vikings rallied, taking control of the set 21-18.
  • Augustana won the set 25-21. 
  • Kills from Carel and Manojlovic shrunk Augustana's advantage to one. 
  • A bad set for Augustana flipped the score to 17-16. 
  • After the Vikings went ahead by two, Carthage ended the set with kills from Carel and Boston, an ace from Bakhaus, and a combined block from Boston and Carel.
  • Augustana controlled a two-point set score in the fourth to start. 
  • Carthage utilized a 6-2 run, making it 12-10. 
  • Following the Vikings regaining control by two, a Carel kill changed the score to 15-13 in favor of Carthage. 
  • The home team put together a 9-3 run as the Vikings forced a fifth set 26-24. 
  • With the momentum, Augustana jumped to a 7-4 margin in the fifth. 
  • Another kill got the deficit to two, but the Vikings went on to win the match 15-11.

"We really struggled offensively tonight. It's hard to win when your side out percentage is low. Their serving had something to do with that and we struggled to pass. Kristina Manojlovic was a bright spot offensively. We gotta learn from this and regroup."


Team Results
  • The Firebirds travel to Wisconsin-Platteville for the Platteville Triangular. 
  • Carthage plays Wisconsin-River Falls and Wisconsin-Platteville on Saturday, October 7. First set is scheduled for 12 p.m.
