Firebirds Bounce Back With 69-48 Victory over Illinois Wesleyan

KENOSHA, Wis. — In their first home game of the 2023 portion of the season, the Carthage College men's basketball team rolled through Illinois Wesleyan 69-48 Saturday afternoon in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) competition. 

The Basics
 
  • Final score: Carthage 69 - Illinois Wesleyan 48
  • Location: Kenosha, Wisconsin - Tarble Arena
  • Records: Carthage 11-2 (4-1 CCIW), Illinois Wesleyan 6-6 (3-2 CCIW)
 
 
How it Happened 
  • Carthage opened with a six-point advantage with buckets from Julian Campbell and AJ Johnson
  • Back-to-back long-range three-pointers from Fillip Bulatovic and Johnson extended the lead to 22-14 with 11:35 in the half. 
  • Although the Titans made it a three-point game with a layup, Carthage pushed the lead back to five as Antuan Nesbitt connected on a layup. 
  • Following a dunk for the visitors, Carthage went on a 6-0 run to close out the half making it 32-23 at intermission. 
  • With momentum on their side, the Firebirds began the second half with a 13-4 run. 
  • Later, another layup from Nesbitt propelled the margin to 20. 
  • A pair of free throws from Johnson made it 65-43 as Carthage went on to win 69-48. 
 
High Flyers
  • AJ Johnson poured in a game-high 22 points and grabbed six rebounds. Johnson also blocked three shots in the contest. 
  • For the seventh time this season, Julian Campbell had over 10 points in a game. Campbell registered 15 and six rebounds. 
  • Fillip Bulatovic recorded his third double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Bulatovic had a team-best five assists.
  • The Carthage defense held Illinois Wesleyan to 20-63 shooting from the floor (31.7%) and 1-19 (5.3%) from three-point range.
  • The last time the Firebirds beat Illinois Wesleyan by 20 or more points was during the 2010-11 season when Carthage won 73-52 at home on January 8.
