Firebirds Collect Easy Regular Season Sweep over Elmhurst

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Carthage College women's basketball team defeated Elmhurst 69-58 to sweep the regular season series matchup on Saturday afternoon. 


The Basics
 
  • Final score: Carthage 69 - Elmhurst 58
  • Location: Tarble Arena - Kenosha, Wisconsin. 
  • Records: Carthage 9-9 (5-4 CCIW), Elmhurst 2-15 (0-9 CCIW)  

How it Happened 
 
  • The Firebirds started the night with a 15-9 score with a pair of free throws from Lauren Knight
  • The Bluejays battled back to get within one with 2:02 left in the first quarter. 
  • Knight rattled home a three with 30 seconds left to bring the Birds back on top at the end of the first quarter, 21-19.
  • Carthage kept the heat going, pushing the score to nine with a three-pointer from Ayanna Ester
  • Carthage held a 12-point margin into halftime with a three-point bucket from Margueret Spear
  • A quick steal from Destiny Antoine sparked a 14-6 run capped off with a three-point bucket from Emma Thistle
  • Carthage continued their strong defensive effort heading into the third quarter ahead 62-38 
  • The Firebirds continued the momentum in the final quarter as a jumper from Thistle made it 69-48. 
  • Carthage cruised to the 69-58 victory. 

High Flyers
 
  • Marianna Morrissey led the Firebirds in scoring with a season-best 19 points and six rebounds. Morrissey also registered three steals and four assists. 
  • Lauren Knight added 15 points and four rebounds for Carthage on the day. 
  • Addison Ebeling came off the bench to add 10 points, a season-best for the junior.
  • The victory is the fifth straight victory over Elmhurst since the 2020-21 season. Carthage is 8-2 against Elmhurst in the last 10 matchups.
