Firebirds Fall Short at CCIW Semifinals in Close Contest With Cardinals

KENOSHA, Wis. — Men's Lacrosse fell 18-14 this Friday evening against the visiting North Central Cardinals (8-7, 3-3 CCIW) as the Firebirds hosted the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament Semifinals at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. The Firebirds capped off their season tonight at 12-5 overall and 5-1 in conference.

Sophomore attacker Alec Gern scored the first goal of the day to open the match for the Firebirds. North Central answered with three straight goals of their own, before attacker Michael Stell scored off an assist from sophomore George Burchfield. Goal-leader Andrew Johnson and Ben Krok flushed two back to back unassisted goals for Carthage, which were answered by a mutual set of goals from the visiting Cardinals. Down one, Alec Gern scored one last goal with :18 second left in the first to even the match out at 5-5 heading into the second.

After North Central opened with two goals to start the period, Andrew Johnson, Andrew Frey, and Ben Krok rifled three goals in the last nine minutes past North Central to close out the opening half with an 8-7 advantage over the Cardinals.

North Central again scored back to back goals to open the new period. Andrew Johnson responded with corresponding goals of his own, recapturing the Firebird advantage at 10-9 within a 45-second time span. With momentum on their side in the middle of the third, George Burchfield, Michael Stell, and Andrew Frey netted three more goals for the Firebirds. With the score at 13-9 Carthage, North Central rallied with four goals in the last five minutes of the period to bring the game to 13-13 heading into the final quarter.

An opening goal for the Cardinals in the fourth was matched again by midfielder George Burchfield to give the Firebirds their final point of the match at 14-14. A goal at 4:20 by the visiting team led to a surprisingly strong series by the Cardinals, scoring three added consecutive goals to slip away with a four-point advantage for the match and advance to the next round of the CCIW Tournament.

  • First-Team All-CCIW Sophomore George Burchfield eclipsed his 100th point of his career with an assist early in the first quarter of today's match. After picking up four points tonight off of a pair of goals and assists, he now has 103 points in his two seasons as a Firebird.
  • First-Team All-CCIW Sophomore Andrew Johnson moved up to the eighth spot on Carthage's record book for most points in a season with 78. Johnson had five points tonight off four goals and one assist. 
  • Johnson now holds Carthage's second-highest points/game percentage at 4.59, previously held by Noah Lindner (2019-21) at 4.49. He also improved three spots on the all-time leaderboard for goals/game in a single season with 3.0. He held the ninth-spot last year with 2.77.
  • Sam Wallace now holds the seventh spot in program history for caused turnovers in a season with 39. He also tied Dustin Heinrichs ('09) record for caused turnovers per game at 2.60 and sits in fifth in the record book.
  • This Firebird team holds eighth in program history for points in a season with 353, beating 2021's team at 302. They are also eighth in total goals with 224 and seventh in total assists with 129 on the year.
  • The team tied for seventh in program history for most wins in a season, alongside 2012's roster who also finished with 12 victories.
