League of Legends Team Advances to Final Four at Nationals

5/19/2022 12:32:00 PM

KENOSHA, Wis. — The NECC National Tournament for League of Legends saw two teams from the Carthage esports program qualify, with one picking up a pair of victories to advance to the final four round.

The Firebirds A team began their day taking on the University of Ottawa (Canada) and came out strong, but would lose key team fights throughout that proved to be enough for Carthage's opponent to win 2-0. Playing against Ottawa University in Kansas next, the Firebirds picked up game one, but would drop the next two to fall 2-1 in their elimination match.

"The League of Legends A team had a great season," said director of esports Kevin Palmer. "We don't have any seniors on the team, so we're looking forward to returning everyone this coming fall and coming back better than ever."

Carthage's B team opened their day with a strong 2-0 victory of Queen's University after finding weak points to put them up in kills and gold. Advancing to take on Misericordia, a team the Firebirds had lost to in a tournament earlier this year, Carthage swept them 2-0 to advance to the final four round.

"The B team was led by Wayne Jackson on the bottom lane and Clayton Kruse on the mid lane," said Palmer. "They both were excellent throughout the match, and proved to be the difference to help push us through to take down Misericordia."

The Carthage League of Legends B team will take on the winner of Waldorf and King's College in their semifinal match on Thursday, May 19 at 6 p.m. CT, with a live stream on the NECC Twitch channel.
