Firebirds Upended by UChicago at Home

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College women's lacrosse team fell to the University of Chicago 17-8 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) action on Wednesday evening at Art Keller Field.

UChicago (13-1, 4-0 CCIW), ranked No. 20 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll, began with three unanswered goals before Rachel Harris netted two for the Firebirds (12-2, 2-1 CCIW). Maddie Berni tied the game at three with 5:40 left in the first quarter. The Maroons scored two before another goal from Berni made the score 5-4 heading into the second quarter. UChicago scored five in the second to head into halftime up 10-4.

Margaux Giacotto scored her 51st goal of the season to start the third quarter cutting the margin to five. Both teams traded a pair of goals however, the visitors tacked on four-straight goals moving the score to 15-6 heading to the final quarter of play.

In the fourth, after UChicago scored one, Elizabeth Oda put one in the back of the net shrinking the deficit to nine until the Maroons put another goal in the net. Though a closing goal from Hanna Holloway made it a nine-point margin again, UChicago took the victory.

Carthage hits the road facing Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday, April 23 starting at 4 p.m.

Head Coach John Sung

"I think we started off pretty well in that first quarter. They went on a little bit of a run in the second, third, and fourth quarter but obviously, we got back into it. However, I think this game showed us that we can compete. I'm really proud of the way Jordyn Kaplan played for us defensively. Hanna Holloway had a bunch of good plays today. I know we are going to see them again. I think the biggest thing for us is just how we adjust. When we lost our first game, we figured out everything we needed to do. Going and competing with this team shows us what is to come. So, hopefully, we get to see them in two weeks again. This is an exciting opportunity for us."
