Firebirds Take Down Augustana in the Snow for First Conference Win

KENOSHA, Wis. — Up against the elements as well as their opponents, the Carthage men's lacrosse team defeated Augustana 15-10 on Saturday afternoon to begin their conference schedule with a win at Art Keller Field.

The Firebirds (8-3) took an early lead in the contest, as George Burchfield found William Clemens for the goal, before Ben Krok scored moments later to make it 2-0. The two teams would trade goals to finish off the first quarter, with Clemens and Burchfield adding two more to set the scoreboard at 4-2 in favor of Carthage. To begin the second quarter, Jameson Stahl launched a deep pass to Gern for the score seconds in, with Gern scoring twice more in response to a Vikings (6-3) goal to make it 7-3. Augustana scored twice more before the halftime break, but the Firebirds would hold a 7-5 advantage.

While the visitors made it a one point game to begin the third quarter, Gern and Burchfield scored a pair of man-up goals to take a 9-6 lead. With one more goal each from Krok and Gern, Carthage entered the final 15 minutes of play up four goals. The Firebirds would outscore the Vikings yet again in the fourth quarter, to claim the five point victory on their senior day.
