Softball Splits Tuesday’s CCIW Action at North Park

CHICAGO — Playing their first road conference doubleheader of the season, the Carthage College softball team split the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) competition falling in game one 3-0 before winning the second game 4-2 on Tuesday at Holmgren Athletic Complex.

The Vikings (12-16, 4-8 CCIW) took the lead in the first inning with an RBI single to right center. Though the Firebirds (10-10, 5-3 CCIW) had baserunners in scoring position in the fifth, a ground out for the visitors kept the score at 1-0 in favor of North Park. The Vikings added to their lead in the sixth with an RBI triple and an RBI single moving the score to 3-0. A leadoff triple in the seventh got Maddie Conway in scoring position in the seventh. After a single from Rylee Johnson wasn't deep enough to score Conway, a groundout ended the game for the North Park win.

In game two, a leadoff triple from Bella Spittler put her in position to score on a single down the right field line from Alaina Azar taking a 1-0 lead for Carthage. Following a two-run homer for the Vikings in the third, the Firebirds tied it with another Azar RBI single. In the fifth, Azar collected her third RBI of the game with a single to left center putting the Firebirds ahead 3-2. Later in the inning, Izzy Hernandez singled down the right field line allowing Kiley Lamb to score. The Firebirds' defense ended the game with a closing flyout to win 4-2.

Carthage takes a break from conference play as they face Wisconsin-Whitewater which is scheduled for Thursday, April 21 starting at 3 p.m.
