Carthage Softball Team Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader at Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. — The Carthage College softball team defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater 9-0 in game one before falling in extra innings 1-0 on Thursday in non-conference action at Van Steenderen Softball Diamond.

The Firebirds (11-11) put four on the board in the top of the first inning of game one. After Katie Trail walked and Maddie Conway got on base, Naomi Alonzo hit a grand slam home run to left field to go up 4-0. A fielding error on the second allowed Rylee Johnson to score while an RBI groundout from Trail extended the lead to 6-0. In the fifth, Olivia Capuano hit an RBI single to right field moving the lead to 7-0. Later, a two-run double from Alaina Azar put the Firebirds up nine as Carthage took the game one win.

In game two, the score was locked at zeros until the eighth inning when a double for Wisconsin-Whitewater (13-13) put a runner on base. A walk-off RBI single won it for the Warhawks 1-0.

Next up, Carthage faces Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, April 23 starting at 1 p.m.
