Carthage Softball Wraps Up Spring Trip in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. — Playing three games on the final day in Florida, the Carthage College softball team fell to Wisconsin-Stevens Point 5-4 in game one, lost to Simpson 4-0 before concluding with a 9-1 win over Fredonia on Friday.

Izzy Hernandez scored first for Carthage in game one off a fielder's choice. After Wisconsin-Stevens Point took a five-run margin, the Firebirds shrunk the deficit to one in the sixth. An RBI single from Kristina Chronos and a Bella Spittler single scored two making it a 5-4 game. Though Carthage held the Pointers scoreless in the sixth, two lineouts and a ground out ended the game.

Game two saw Simpson (11-3) start with a 1-0 margin then added three in the third. Carthage had a chance to get on the board in the sixth but a ground out ended the inning as Simpson went on to win the game.

After Fredonia (3-11) scored a lone run in the opening inning, Spittler stole home tying it at one. A throwing error for the Blue Devils gave Carthage a 2-1 lead heading to the second inning. In the third, Courtney Polanski singled to right field allowing Hernandez to score. Katie Trail knocked a two-run single extending the Firebirds advantage to 5-1. Carthage added four in the sixth capped off by a two-RBI single from Maddie Conway for the 9-1 victory.

Carthage returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 23 facing Lake Forest in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
