Firebirds Softball Splits Thursday Competition in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. — On Thursday of the Spring Games, the Carthage College softball team fell in game one to Wooster 9-2 before concluding the day with an 8-0 win over New York University at Legends Field.

Wooster (4-2) got on the board first in with two runs in the first. Carthage (3-4) cut the deficit to one as a sac fly from Kirby Peters allowed Kailey Wagner to score. Wooster added to their lead in the second scoring five runs. The Firebirds retaliated in the bottom half of the inning as a fielder's choice scored Naomi Alonzo, walk scored Courtney Polanski and another fielder's choice allowed Alaina Azar to cross home plate flipping the score to 7-4. In the third, Carthage shrank the deficit to two as two RBI singles from Polanski and Azar made it 9-6. Following a double to left center from Alonzo, she was able to score off another RBI single from Azar making it a two-run margin. After the Firebirds held the Fighting Scots scoreless in the seventh, Carthage had a runner on base but a pop out, flyout, and ground out gave Wooster the win 9-6.

In game two, Carthage came out with a quick lead as an error for New York University (3-6) allowed two Firebirds to cross home plate. In the third, a three-run triple from Azar extended the lead to 5-0. Donna Stevens singled through the left side which scored Polanski moving the score to 6-0. A two-RBI single from Izzy Hernandez made it 8-0 as three straight ground outs in the bottom of the sixth sealed the win.

Carthage concludes their Florida trip facing Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Simpson, and Fredonia with game one starting at 10:15 a.m.
