Firebirds Start Spring Games 2-2 through First Two Days

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Carthage College softball team started the 2022 season in Florida going 2-2 through the first two days of the Spring Games. 

After losing game one against Defiance 7-0, the Firebirds picked up a 9-4 victory over Scranton on Sunday, March 13. Senior Rylee Johnson had three runs batted in while Maddie Conway and Izzy Hernandez each had two in the game. Freshman Kristina Chronos recorded her first career hit in the game while Becca Mentzer pitched all seven innings striking out three. "We bounced back well after the first game today," said head coach Amy Gillmore after day one. "We have a lot to work on but I am excited to see what we can do."

Carthage opened day two with a 5-1 victory over Millsaps. Hits came from Chronos, who led the team with three, followed by Courtney Polanski (2), Hernandez (2), Conway (2), and Bella Spittler (2). Conway hit her first career home run in the contest while Naomi Alonzo collected her first win in the circle striking out six. 

In the final game of day two, the Firebirds fell short losing to Hamilton 6-5. The Firebirds were led by Cynthia Ibarra, Johnson, and Spittler who all had two hits. Hernandez recorded two runs batted in while Spittler swiped her sixth base of the season. In the circle, Conway struck out four over seven innings of work. 

Carthage continues the Spring Games facing Scranton at 3:15 p.m. CT and then plays against St. Scholastica at 5:15 p.m. CT.
