Electric Atmosphere Helps No. 9 Firebirds Defeat UC Santa Cruz

KENOSHA, Wis. — The No. 9 Carthage College men's volleyball team defeated UC Santa Cruz 3-1 in non-conference action Saturday night at Tarble Arena.

Carthage (3-3) began the match with a 5-2 margin sparked by an ace from Matt Slivinski. Later in the set, a kill from Slivinski made it 12-7. UC Santa Cruz (1-10) got it to 14-9 with an attack error but a Ryan Cholewinski kill pushed the lead to 15-9. The Banana Slugs made it a four-point margin with a kill but the Firebirds responded with a kill from Drew Jansen. The visitors got it to four but Carthage won the set with a Jansen kill 25-20.

In the second, UC Santa Cruz started with a 5-3 advantage. David Markes put in a kill and ace which flipped the score to 9-8, however, the Banana Slugs took the lead back 13-11 off a Firebirds attack error. Carthage responded tying it at 16 then Jansen hit an ace moving the score to 17-16. With the score even at 20, an ace from Slivinski, a Peyton Wieter kill, and a visitors attack error won it for Carthage 25-21.

Each team traded point-for-point until the Banana Slugs took a three-point margin off a Firebirds attack error. The visitors controlled a 20-15 lead until the home team shrank it to two with a kill from Slivinski 24-22. After each team went back-and-forth, the visitors closed it with a kill 28-26.

Wieter struck another kill in the fourth which made it 13-10 in favor of Carthage. Later, back-to-back kills from Slivinski and Jansen made it 18-17 as Carthage 25-19 with a final block from Slivinski.

Next up, Carthage hits the road facing Concordia (Wis.) on Wednesday, February 9 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach JW Kieckhefer

"Thank you to Andy Palmen and Palmen Auto for their generous contribution to sponsoring our national championship celebration. Incredibly proud of the way we responded after a tough loss in the third set. David Markes was once again unbelievable offensively and has been a massive spark to our team. Kyle Cohan's defensive performance was inspiring today and led us to victory with his effort. He has gotten so much better in that phase of the game and it's impressive to watch. Drew Jansen had a great night for us in his second start of his career and I'm proud of the way he battled all night.

Thank you to all the fans, students, parents, alumni, faculty, and staff who all came out tonight. This place is special, Tarble was rocking tonight and I love every minute of being here."
