Late Game Heroics Lift Firebirds over Vikings

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — In their regular season road finale, the Carthage College football team won over Augustana (Ill.) 37-30 Saturday afternoon. 

The Basics
  • Final score: Carthage 37 - Augustana 30

How it Happened
  • The home team got on the board first, scoring 13 unanswered points. 
  • Just before halftime, Cristian Beltran scored on a six-yard rush as Carthage connected on the two-point conversion to head into halftime down 13-8. 
  • In the third, Beltran found Alex Jarvis for a 14-yard touchdown pass to give the Firebirds control of the game 16-13. 
  • Following the Vikings scoring on a touchdown pass, a 59-yard touchdown throw from Beltran found Sylvere Campbell making the score 23-20 in favor of the visitors. 
  • In the fourth, Nasir Canty added a three-yard touchdown rush for the 30-20 score. 
  • The Vikings retaliated with a touchdown and tied it at 30 with a 42-yard field goal. 
  • With 21 seconds left, Beltran threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Jarvis for the 37-30 victory. 

High Flyers
  • Through the air, Cristian Beltran passed for 276 yards and three touchdowns, Beltran has passed for three or more touchdowns in four games this season. 
  • Nasir Canty rushed for a season-best 149 yards for the Firebirds and one touchdown rush. 
  • Sylvere Campbell was the leading receiver for the Firebirds hauling in five receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown. 
  • Chris DiVito tallied 10 tackles and one forced fumble as he entered today's game as the leader for total tackles in the nation. 
  • Zach Hale chipped in with eight tackles, while Tanner Ludwig had one interception and three tackles. 
  • Oliver Cox had one forced fumble and one tackle in the game. 

Coachs Remarks
"I thought the staff put together a really good game plan, and our guys did an amazing job executing it. They played their butts off and made plays in critical situations. It was always hard to win on the road, and they stepped up today."
